New Milton Town 1 AFC Portchester 4
AFC Portchester booked their place in the next round of the FA Vase with an emphatic win over New Milton Town.
The home side had the better of the early exchanges but once the Royals got their noses in front they largely controlled the game and ran out comfortable winners.
It looked like it was going to be another one of those afternoons for the visitors early on when New Milton went close to taking the lead after two minutes.
Portchester lost the ball on the right and Rhys Jones knocked his pass forward to Sam White, whose shot beat keeper Brad Snelling but it came back off the post.
On nine minutes Portchester had a couple of good chances to score when a low cross from the right was blocked and the ball fell to Terrell Lewis but his low shot was blocked by the leg of keeper Luke Dennison.
From the resulting corner, a clearance fell at the feet of Lewis 25 yards out but his first time shot whistled just over the crossbar.
The home side took the lead on 13 minutes when a quick throw-in on the right found Matt Gane. He cut inside towards the box and then hit a shot from 15 yards out which flew into the far corner of the net.
However, home joy was short-lived as the visitors got themselves level two minutes later. Lewis received the ball on the right and his cross found Dan Wooden, who headed it home into the net.
Mike Turvey almost put the visitors in front when he was put clear of the home defence but he lifted his shot over the top.
Owen Fee then cut in from the left wing and squared the ball to Wooden but his close range shot was blocked by the legs of Dennison.
New Milton almost gifted a goal to Portchester on 22 minutes when Dennison’s clearance went straight to Lewis but the keeper recovered enough to get back towards goal to push the shot around the post.
Portchester finally took the lead on 32 minutes when they surged forward from midfield and Wooden picked out Turvey with a pass. Turvey cut inside before hitting his shot past Dennison and into the net.
The visitors almost got another goal a minute before half time when a corner was cleared to Wooden, who had two shots on goal blocked. The loose ball then fell to Adam Cripps and his shot was blocked once again by the legs of Dennison.
Play was fairly even at the beginning of the second half until Portchester created more good chances to score midway through the half.
After good play down the right the ball was played into the penalty area to Steve Ramsey but he hit his first time shot over the top. Nathan Paxton then picked out Fee’s forward run and he tried to place his shot into the net but it hit the crossbar.
On 75 minutes more good build up play down the right saw the ball crossed into Paxton but Dennison tipped his header over the crossbar.
Portchester eventually got their third goal on 82 minutes after two players went down injured in the centre circle after challenging for the ball.
Play was allowed to continue and Fee picked out Ramsey in the box, who saw his shot blocked. In the next phase of attack a low cross from the right found Wooden and he fired home from in front of goal.
The visitors got their fourth goal with two minutes remaining when good passing through midfield saw the ball played to Adam Cripps on the edge of the penalty area. He then took the ball forward before slotting home his shot into the net.
