AFC Portchester 3 Brockenhurst 1
Portchester wrecked Brockenhurst’s 100 per cent winning start in the Wessex Premier Division with three goals in the final 19 minutes of this game.
Despite the home side’s dominance and creating hatfuls of chances, the New Forest side looked to be heading for another victory when they took the lead mid-way through the second half.
However, the Royals eventually found their shooting boots in the final stages of the game to take all three points.
Brockenhurst almost made the perfect start to the afternoon on three minutes when Rafa Ramos picked up the ball on the left and drove forward. After going into the penalty area he squared the ball to Leon Carbayo-Borges but his shot hit the crossbar from a few yards out.
Portchester replied immediately when Mike Turvey was played in through the middle and after being forced wide he crossed the ball to Dan Wooden whose header had to be tipped over by keeper Jon Webb.
A long throw in by Adam Cripps almost caught the visitors out when it fell to Wooden but his flick-on from in front of goal went straight at Webb.
Turvey was then sent clear of the Brockenhurst defence again and played the ball forward for Wooden to chase but as he ran through, Ronan Moore clipped his ankle and the visiting defender was shown a straight red card. From the free kick, Webb had to dive to his right to push Ellis Martin’s shot away and when the ball came back across goal, Turvey tried to guide it in but he put his effort over.
Wooden then turned provider when his pass found Owen Fee, who let fly from 30 yards out and his shot fizzed just over the crossbar.
Nathan Paxton was caught offside when he tried to guide Wooden’s cross home from in front of goal and after Rob Evans had burst into the box, Paxton’s shot was blocked wide by a defender.
Wooden then tried his luck from 25 yards out but his low shot went straight at Webb, and Paxton put a free header straight at Webb from Martin’s cross.
A cross from the right picked out Liam Bush on the left and his shot from 25 yards out flew just over, and Fee then saw his low cross from the left partially blocked before Evans’ first time shot from the rebound went well over.
Wooden hit another shot straight at Webb before at the other end Ramos got clear of the home defence after Portchester lost the ball in midfield but keeper Brad Snelling got down to divert his shot behind for a corner.
The second half went much the same way as the first - the home side created plenty of chances but wasted them and the visitors looked threatening on the few counter attacks they launched.
Paxton had two good chances to score after the re-start - he put one narrowly wide and hit the post with his second opportunity.
On 54 minutes Will Tickle picked up the ball on the right and quickly got to the edge of the box before firing off a shot which Snelling had to beat away.
Three minutes later the same play got the better of the home defence again but this time he was sent tumbling inside the penalty area.
Jude Nwachukwu tried to place his spot kick down the middle of the goal and Snelling pushed it out before the same player made sure he knocked the rebound into the net.
Portchester drew level on 71 minutes when Paxton’s header went to Wooden and he was brought down inside the penalty area as he tried to cut inside his marker. Martin sent Webb diving the wrong way with his spot kick.
The home side took the lead four minutes later when Martin was brought down on the edge of the box and he picked himself up to fire an unstoppable free kick into the net, with Webb rooted to the spot.
Brockenhurst almost snatched an equaliser straight away when a corner from the right picked out Nwachukwu but he put his header straight at Snelling.
Portchester made sure the three points would be staying with them on 84 minutes when a long ball forward was knocked down by Paxton into the path of substitute James Thomson, who smashed his shot home into the roof of the net.
The visitors went close again two minutes later when a free kick was flicked on into the box and Ramos’ header in front of goal hit the crossbar.
