AFC Totton 4 AFC Portchester 1
AFC Totton striker Craig Feeney proved to be the telling difference between the two sides in this Hampshire Senior Cup tie.
Portchester looked to be the likely winners in the opening stages of the second half, with the scores level at 1-1 and the home side down to ten men.
However, the Totton front man showed his Southern League experience to fire his side through to the next round.
The Royals again created a whole host of chances throughout the game but they couldn’t find the finishing touch in front of goal which ultimately caused them to be knocked out of this county competition - coupled with some bad defensive errors too.
Both sides traded chances in the opening exchanges. Portchester went close to scoring on four minutes when Owen Fee got clear down the left and his cross was only just missed by Nathan Paxton.
The ball ran to Bradey Norton on the right, who set the ball back to Mike Turvey and his shot only just went over the top.
Two minutes later at the other end, Oliver Bradley found some space on the right and after driving into the penalty area he hit a shot which was blocked by both Liam Bush and keeper Brad Snelling for a corner.
The home side took the lead on 12 minutes after Ellis Martin headed Steve Ramsey’s free kick just wide. From keeper Alexander Cull’s long goal kick, Portchester’s defence was caught pushed too far forwards and Feeney capitalised on the error by chasing down the ball and then firing it low past Snelling and inside the far post.
However, Totton’s lead lasted only three minutes when a free kick crossed into the box from the left was missed by runners to the near post but it ran to Norton, who tucked his shot away from inside the six yard box.
Bradley went close for the home side on 18 minutes when he tried to dink his shot home from inside the box but it dropped on to the roof of the net, and at the other end Turvey went close when he cut inside but his effort was deflected over the target.
Martin headed home for Portchester on 26 minutes from a free kick but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Two minutes later Matthew Hartmann picked up a clearance on the edge of the box and unleashed a powerful shot on goal which was heading in until Snelling leapt to his left and pushed the ball on to the crossbar.
Portchester went close again with two chances on the half hour mark. Paxton shot straight at Cull from the edge of the box after being set up by Norton and in the next attack the home keeper had to beat away Fee’s effort after he latched on to a cross-field pass.
Totton were reduced to ten men on 40 minutes when Will Archer was unfortunate to pick up his second yellow card of the evening, and with a minute remaining Fee burst into the box and took the ball around Cull but ran out of room to fire off a shot.
He pulled the ball back to Ramsey but he steered his effort just wide of the goal.
Totton had the first chance of the second half through Bradley but Snelling blocked his effort with his legs.
At the other end a combination of a defender and the goalkeeper blocked Turvey’s shot and the resulting corner dropped to Josh Warren and Paxton a few yards out at the far post but neither of them could knock the ball over the line.
On 50 minutes Portchester broke quickly forward down the right and a ball into the middle found Turvey, who played it on to Fee. He hit a shot towards goal and when Paxton tried to apply the finishing touch he diverted the ball on to the top of the crossbar and over.
The visitors paid the price for their missed chances when the home side took the lead on 61 minutes. Another long clearance down the pitch was not dealt with, allowing Feaney to chase the ball down.
He then switched the ball to Hartmann, who was running into the penalty area, and he side stepped two tackles before rolling his shot into the net.
Portchester almost drew level straight away when the home side cleared a corner as far as Fee, who crossed it back in and Warren out jumped Cull to head the ball but it dropped on to the roof of the net.
The visitors were caught napping for Totton’s third goal on 66 minutes when Matthew Bozier picked up the ball on the left edge of his own penalty area and drove forward.
He ran into the other half unopposed before sliding his pass through to Feeney inside the box and the striker hit his shot past Snelling and into the net.
Portchester seemed to run out of momentum in the later stages of the half and Feeney went close to scoring again after they lost possession on 72 minutes but his shot cannoned back off the outside of the post.
With 90 minutes on the clock substitute Mohamed Bakary picked up a cross on the right hand side of the box and fizzed a shot towards goal which hit the near post and bounced to safety.
Totton completed the scoring in the fourth minute of injury time when the ball was played forward up the left. Substitute Olly Searle tried to play it back to Snelling but he under hit the ball and Feeney latched on to it and fired home into the net.
