AFC Portchester chairman Paul Kelly has lavished praise on the club’s supporters and urged more people to join the growing army of fans at home and away games.

His comments followed Saturday’s 280 mile round trip to Cullompton in Devon in the First Round of the FA Vase, which Portchester won 1-0 thanks to an injury time winner by Jason Parish.
The Royals were cheered on by plenty of travelling supporters - who made the journey on the club’s official coach to the game or under their own steam - and it was a sight which impressed Kelly.
He said: “I must pay tribute to all of our supporters who made the long trip to Devon on Saturday. It was a fantastic effort when you consider the length of the journey there and back and the weather on the day too.
“It is brilliant to see so many Portchester faces when we arrive at away games - the numbers have really gone up this season and we all appreciate the efforts people are making to support the club.
“Seeing the support at matches both home and away makes a big difference to the players and everyone working behind the scenes at the club - it gives everyone a real boost and it makes a big difference on match days so the supporters are also playing an active role in what we are trying to build at Portchester on and off the pitch.
“It was a fantastic day at Cullompton, and I must also thank our hosts on Saturday for their excellent hospitality before, during and after the game. They were a friendly, welcoming club.
“We await the draw for the Second Round of the FA Vase and if it is another away tie I hope many more people will travel to cheer on the team. If it is a home tie that will allow even more supporters to get behind their club on home soil.”
The club is also attracting many more followers of its fortunes online, with thousands of people now regularly keeping up to date with progress on matchdays via Twitter, Facebook and the club’s website.
Vice chairman Graeme Moir added: “There has been a big increase in website and social media traffic across the club’s sites so far this season.
“It shows the growing interest there is in the club and again these online figures and shows of support are playing a key role in what we are developing on and off the pitch. They make a difference to everyone at the club.
"Not everyone can get to every game but hopefully what people are reading and seeing online will encourage them to join us on a match day when they can."
