Amesbury Town 0 AFC Portchester 2
AFC Portchester recorded a comfortable victory over the Premier Division’s bottom side.
With a new management team recently installed and new players added to their squad, there was a feeling of rebuilding about Amesbury after their dismal start to the season.
They failed to fashion any serious attempts on the Portchester goal throughout the 90 minutes but the fact they tried to keep playing and working hard throughout the game shows they may well present a different proposition to opponents in the coming weeks.
The first real opportunity of the game brought the opening goal on 21 minutes after Dan Wooden was sent tumbling to the ground.
He picked himself up to fire a 25 yard free kick into the net, with home keeper Jordan Tewkesbury rooted to the spot.
Three minutes later Callum Chugg out jumped everyone to reach a corner from the right but his header was deflected wide by a defender.
On 28 minutes Nathan Paxton was sent clear down the right and after cutting inside the penalty area he sent the ball across the six yard box to Patrick Hnath who scooped his shot over the target from just two yards out.
A deep cross from the left picked out Paxton inside the box four minutes later but his header bounced off a defender and was easily gathered up by Tewkesbury.
On the stroke of half time a long pass forward found Wooden on the right and his cross picked out Hnath at the far post but he directed his header on to the roof of the net.
Portchester doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half when a long ball forward picked out Hnath on the right and as he cut inside his marker he was brought down inside the box.
Steve Ramsey made no mistake with his spot kick, sending Tewkesbury diving the wrong way.
On 63 minutes Adam Cripps’ long throw in from the left was flicked inside by Wooden to Ramsey but from the edge of the box he pulled his shot wide.
Three minutes later another long throw in from Cripps was flicked inside, this time into the path of Paxton who placed his shot against the crossbar.
Substitute Jordan Brooks then spread a pass out to the right which Wooden took inside to the edge of the box but he pulled his shot wide of the near post.
On 78 minutes a corner from the left caused some more problems for the home side. The initial header towards goal was blocked and Wooden followed up with another header but it dropped straight at the keeper.
With five minutes remaining the ball was spread wide to substitute George Murage on the right. He cut inside a defender but after creating space he scuffed his shot and it rolled through to Tewkesbury.
