AFC Portchester manager Mick Catlin believes his new assistant manager has a crucial role to play in helping the club achieve its Southern League ambitions.

Catlin has appointed Lee Molyneaux as his assistant ahead of the 2020-21 campaign and the Royals’ boss knows his new recruit well from when he was a player.

Catlin was on the coaching staff at Gosport Borough when Molyneaux was a player at Privett Park, making 83 appearances between 2011 and 2015 and also playing in Gosport’s Wembley appearance in the 2014 FA Trophy final.

The former Portsmouth and Oxford United defender then moved to Havant and Waterlooville, helping the Hawks to two consecutive league titles which saw them promoted to the National League.

On the coaching front, Molyneaux had a player-coach role at Havant and Waterlooville during the 2018-19 season before he was appointed manager at Gosport Borough in May 2019.

Molyneaux resigned from his Gosport role earlier this month and Catlin was keen to get a man who he describes as “having had a distinguished non league career” to join his coaching team at the Crest Finance Stadium.

Catlin said: “Lee is a player who always gave his all for me every time he pulled on a shirt.

“After a season as manager at Gosport Borough where he stabilised the club after some turbulent years, he resigned citing personal reasons.

“Lee has all the attributes to be a great manager and I hope I can help him achieve that at AFC Portchester when the time is right.

“He will be instrumental in helping us reach our goal of promotion in the coming season.”
