AFC Portchester have taken the decision to cancel their annual fireworks and bonfire night event for this year.
The popular family event usually attracts hundreds of people from across the community to enjoy the fireworks display at the Crest Finance Stadium.
However, following the latest government guidance on the Covid-19 situation, the decision to cancel was taken as events with large crowds are unlikely to be able to go ahead during the autumn and winter months.
A club statement said: “We regret that we are having to cancel our popular fireworks and bonfire event but in the circumstances we had no other option.
“The safety and health of the public is of paramount importance at this moment in time and any event which brings large crowds of people together in one place would be too much of a risk in terms of the potential for the spread of coronavirus.
“Therefore we have taken the early decision not to go ahead with this year’s event.
“We are currently allowed spectators for our football matches so the club’s facilities are already enhanced to mitigate the Covid-19 risks and allow people to enjoy events safely in the stadium and its buildings.
“We will continue to monitor the situation in the hope we can take the steps necessary to be able to host major events again as soon as it is safe to do so.
“We are already looking forward to seeing the fireworks and bonfire event return in 2021."
