You don’t always have to re-invent the wheel but sometimes you can tweak and change a few things to make it run better.
A strange analogy perhaps to describe AFC Portchester’s away day preparations but it describes manager Gav Spurway’s thoughts going into the trip to Hayes and Yeading United today (Saturday, September 27).
On their last two away trips to London the Royals have returned with disappointing 2-0 defeats, despite starting their Step 4 away games with a 3-2 win at Fareham Town.
The defeat at Bedfont Sports brought to an end Portchester’s 20-match unbeaten run in away league games, which included 18 wins.
Since then their form on the road in the league has not looked anywhere near as dominant and Spurway now believes it is time to review some aspects of his team’s set up and preparations for away games to reverse the current trend of form in the capital.
Speaking after Tuesday’s League Cup win at Fareham Town, Spurway said: “It’s going to be a tough game (on Saturday) as Hayes and Yeading are flying at the moment.
“We’re looking at these away games – I feel we need to tweak and change a few things.”
The tweaks and changes will hopefully bring a change of fortunes on the road for the Royals but they are set to get a tough test at The SKYEx Community Stadium.
Hayes and Yeading United are currently fourth in the South Central Division’s table, just three points behind leaders Leatherhead.
The Royals are currently down in 16th place but this will be only their sixth league game of the season and they have games in hand on pretty much every team in the division such has been their continued involvement in cup competitions.
