AFC Portchester return to cup action this evening (Tuesday) as they welcome Egham Town to The OnSite Group Stadium in the Velocity League Cup, looking to bounce back quickly from the heartbreak of Saturday’s narrow FA Trophy defeat.
The Royals suffered last-minute disappointment at the weekend, falling to a 1-0 defeat away to Wimborne Town in the Isuzu FA Trophy First Round Proper.
It was a performance full of effort and resilience against higher-league opposition, but a late goal denied Gav Spurway’s side the chance to continue their historic Trophy run.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take from the display, as Portchester once again showed their growing belief and competitive spirit — attributes that will serve them well heading into another knock-out fixture.
Now attention turns to The Velocity Cup, where the Royals will be aiming to respond immediately and continue their strong form at home.
With several impressive performances already this season at The OnSite Group Stadium, Portchester will be eager to deliver another display full of energy, commitment and attacking intent in front of their supporters.
Manager Gav Spurway may look to rotate his squad, giving opportunities to players who have impressed in recent weeks while maintaining the competitive edge that has defined their cup performances so far.
Egham Town arrive on the south coast having not played since last Tuesday night, when they drew 2–2 with Southall in the league.
Their scheduled fixture against Portchester last weekend was postponed due to the Royals’ FA Trophy involvement, meaning this will be the Sarnies’ first outing in a week.
That break could work in their favour as they arrive fresh and well-prepared, but Portchester will hope to make their home advantage count and set the tempo from the start.
With confidence still high from recent home wins over Ascot United and Hendon, the Royals will view this fixture as the perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways immediately.
The goals of Lee Wort, who continues to chase down the club’s all-time scoring record, will again be crucial as Portchester seek to progress to the next round.
After their impressive showing in the FA Trophy, Portchester will be eager to embark on another strong cup campaign and victory on Tuesday night would be the perfect way to start.
With both sides looking to make their mark in the competition, supporters can expect an entertaining contest under the lights at The OnSite Group Stadium.
